Leigh, born Ashleigh Sharpe, grew up in a very small apartment with a very large family. At a young age, when she started trying to find work, she would either get turned away because of her gender or told in an opaque way that 'a woman's place is in the home, and a teenage girl's place is learning how to become a woman.' She was tall for her age, already about the average height of a full-grown woman when she was 12.
One day, she watched a paper delivery boy, crowing out his lungs at the corner; the cigarette fell out of her mouth when she realized that no one could stop her from cutting her hair even shorter and finding the right cap. She was making money in no time, not hand-over-fist by any stretch of the imagination, but enough that she could buy her smokes herself and contribute to the family decent enough.
